What is Functional Medicine?
The Institute for Function Medicine (IFM) defines functional medicine as “a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.”
In functional medicine, a health practitioner looks beyond the resolution of symptoms to identify why the illness occurs in the first place and address those root causes to restore a patient’s health. Each patient is unique, so as her health conditions. A single condition may have many causes, while one single cause may also appear in many conditions. Functional Medicine health practitioners always exercise healthcare with individualized, patient-centered, and science-based approach. Healthcare is never a one size fits all matter.
